Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
