French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have rarely acted to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
